2025 : Field Day, Buncrana

For the second Field Day of 2025, the County Donegal Historical Society paid a visit to Buncrana on Sunday 20th July with local historian John Mc Carron as tour guide.

During our visit we attended many local sites of interest to hear stories of Buncrana’s past, including that of Irish trade unionist John Doherty (1798-1853), the Vaughan’s of Buncrana Castle, the arrest of Wolfe Tone, and Cahir O’ Doherty’s rebellion of 1608.

The visit to Swan Park was particularly noteworthy as the late Harry P. Swan was a former President of the County Donegal Historical Society 1965-66, and someone who donated several important local artifacts to the Society’s Museum.

Society members toured Buncrana in glorious sunshine and it was a visit they will remember as amongst the best in recent years. The day finished with tea and refreshments in the Anglers Centre and the County Donegal Historical Society thanked local historian John Mc Carron for a most informative tour of the area.
