2025 : Field Day, Doirí Beaga

Our third Field Day of 2025 was a most interesting “field day” at Sean Teach Pobal Mhuire, Na Doirí Beaga on Sunday as part of their program for Heritage Week.

Local author and historian Vincent Breslin was the tour guide for the event, where he related various stories from the local area that had gained national prominence. One such story was of the flash flood that occurred there on 15th August 1880 when the flood waters gushed through the doors of the chapel rising to a depth of twelve feet and resulted in the loss of five lives.

The death of RIC District Inspector Martin at the same location on 3rd February 1889 while attempting to arrest Fr. James Mc Fadden PP was amongst other local stories that enthralled the large attending audience. Vincent had a most engaging nature that brought all his stories to life, walking in the footsteps of the stories main characters, while recreating the atmosphere of the period.

The Society expressed their thanks to Vincent for a most interesting and educational afternoon that was appreciated by everyone present.

Our next Field Day will take place at Kilcar on Sunday 7th September.
